In the Waqrapukara- 1 day hike tour (daily departures), discover the majestic Inca construction of Waqrapukara or “horn-shaped fortress”, located in the canyon of the mighty Apurimac River, will be an unforgettable experience, as it is a hidden treasure for travelers looking for something different and with few people. This beautiful sacred place combines an incredible stone work with spectacular natural formations and small lagoons around.

Waqrapukara is one of the hidden beauties of Cusco at 4300 m that not many tourists know. Originally built by the Qinchas and later conquered by the Incas, it was declared national cultural heritage in 2017 and is the Machu Picchu of the pre-incas. This one-day tour from Cusco will take you back in time and make you feel like the ancient Incas once they conquered the Andes Mountains.

Why you will love this experience:

  • You will be one of the first travelers to get to know Waqrapukara.
  • You’ll see lots of Peruvian wildlife, such as alpacas and llamas.
  • You will enjoy beautiful views of the Apurimac Canyon.

Cold breakfast and lunch

Waqrapukara was built by the Qanchi ethnic group in the period of Auqarunas, 1500 to 1000 b.c. The current construction is from the Inca era, in the Wayna Qhapaq period, with the aim of training warriors to defend their leaders and territories conquered in the Andes in the pre-Inca and Inca era. Waqrapukara represents the architecture of power, an Inca sanctuary of the first order, magical and special, out of the ordinary, which denotes an immense political and religious power not yet deciphered.

This day is necessary to leave early for a bus trip to the district of Acomayo, until finally arriving at Qenter Cocha 4000m/13123f, where will begin the walk of 2 ½ hours to Waqrapukara. The geography is rugged with incredible natural rock formations and small lagoons, where you can observe the wildlife of the place, such as condors, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, wild horses and wild ducks.

The archaeological complex is sinuously located along a rocky promontory, built around two horn-shaped mountain peaks, the site has eight Inca terraces with retaining walls and stone stairs.

It will take three hours to walk back along an old road to the town of Waqui, before finding your private bus that will take you back to Cusco.
